Infarct core versus penumbra
Stroke damage splits into tissue that is already dead and a surrounding zone that can still be salvaged (the penumbra). Cell research targets that border zone, not the infarct core — which is exactly why timing of administration matters so much.
Proven care comes first
Practically, patients and families should weight the proven items first: blood pressure, diabetes and lipid control, prescribed antiplatelet therapy and a sustained rehabilitation programme. These determine long-term outcome more than anything else.
Questions before considering cell therapy
If you weigh cell therapy as an add-on, ask which cell type, which route, whether outcomes are scored on standard scales such as mRS or NIHSS, and what follow-up exists. Any offer promising you will definitely walk again should be treated as a red flag.
