Surgical steps
- Only water for the first six to eight hours
- Smooth liquids from day two; porridge, soup and electrolyte drinks through the first two weeks
- Face band in 25-on/5-off or 50-on/10-off cycles for two weeks
- Antiseptic rinses three times a day for two weeks
Recovery & aftercare
- Sleep is possible about six to eight hours after jaw surgery and about four hours after contouring
- Medication is normally prescribed for one week and stopped if there are no problems
Risks & things to consider
- Fruit juice can irritate the stomach and milk may cause diarrhoea while on medication
- While admitted, the face band should be worn even during sleep

How often should you rinse?
EU says rinsing starts the day after surgery, three times a day for two weeks, and after every meal at home; if the rinse runs out, clean water should be used.
