Re-operation

Re-operation centre

The re-operation centre treats patients whose previous lengthening or realignment ran into trouble: nonunion, post-operative malalignment, infection, hardware failure or residual length difference. Each case is re-planned from scratch using prior imaging and the current state of the bone.

Who it suits

  • Nonunion or delayed union after lengthening
  • Malalignment following surgery elsewhere
  • Bone infection or problematic implanted hardware

Technique highlights

  • Large international caseload of revision surgery
  • BMAC and computer-assisted correction available for difficult cases

Surgical steps

  • Send radiographs, operative history and implant details for an online assessment.
  • A completely new plan is drawn up, including removal of existing hardware where needed.
  • Revision surgery with close follow-up until union and alignment are restored.

Recovery & aftercare

  • Recovery is usually longer than after a first operation because bone and soft tissue have already been operated on.
  • You must stay in Korea for the whole lengthening and follow-up period; the international team arranges accommodation, interpretation and the physiotherapy schedule.

Risks & things to consider

  • Bone lengthening is major surgery. Outcome and recovery time depend on bone quality, age, weight and how disciplined the patient is with rehabilitation, so identical results cannot be guaranteed.
  • Daily physiotherapy is mandatory through both the lengthening and consolidation phases. Skipping it risks joint stiffness, muscle contracture or delayed bone healing.
  • Disclose all medical conditions, regular medication, previous bone surgery and drug allergies at the consultation, and stop smoking before and after surgery as instructed — nicotine measurably slows bone healing.

Frequently asked questions

Can an overseas case be assessed before flying to Korea?

Yes — send radiographs and operative history through the online consultation, by email to english@drdonghoon.com or via WhatsApp on +82 10-8729-0030; the team gives a preliminary assessment before you travel.
